FAQ

Plant Blankets - Dag Wool and Sphagnum Moss mix

What are Plant Blankets?

Plant Blankets are landscaping mats that are crafted from a mixture of crushed dag wool(New Zealand's ZQ accredited Merino wool ) and locally-grown sphagnum moss. They are then compressed together into a square sheet and cut up the middle on one side to allow for an easy installation around the plant base.

What is ZQ accreditation for Merino wool?

ZQ accreditation is a management system ensuring that Merino wool is produced under strict rules and guidelines to protect the environment and animals. High country stations in the South Island of New Zealand are qualified under ZQ to produce wool, allowing traceability back to individual farms and ensuring adherence to accreditation rules.

How does wool benefit plants in landscaping?

Wool is a great for landscaping as it has many attributes that help plants survive and thrive. The smothering effect of the blanket helps in the suppression of weeds. Wool holds moisture and releases this moisture slowly, acting as an insulating layer for roots, and deterring pests like possums, rabbits, and hares. In addition, dag wool acts as a slow-release fertilizer and soil conditioner.

FAQ

What is the role of sphagnum moss in Plant Blankets?

NZ sphagnum moss is recognized as a superior quality plant growing medium. When mixed with wool it forms a tangled mass of fibres, providing a weed-suppressing layer, excellent water retention, insulation for roots, and a healthy growing environment with microbial properties that naturally suppresses fungi and bacterial action.

How is NZ sphagnum moss harvested for Plant Blankets?

We use sphagnum moss harvested sustainably in the West Coast of the South Island. It is handpicked and naturally dried on racks in the sun. After picking sphagnum moss regrows naturally without the need to re-seed. It only requires time and, if left alone, will be ready to pick again in 3 to 5 years making it a very environmentally friendly component of Plant Blankets

What benefits does sphagnum moss bring to the growing environment?

Sphagnum moss in Plant Blankets ensures ventilation, keeps roots moist, and binds with wool fibers to keep the mat in place during windy conditions. This all helps to contribute to a favourable growing environment,.

FAQ

How long does the wool/moss blend last in Plant Blankets?

The wool and moss blend in Plant Blankets slowly breaks down over 6-12 months, acting as a slow-release fertilizer and soil conditioner throughout this period.

Can customers trace the origin of the wool in Plant Blankets?

Yes, the ZQ accreditation system will allow customers to trace the origin of the wool in Plant Blankets back to the individual farm where it was grown, ensuring transparency and adherence to accreditation rules. The dag wool currently used in our Plant Blankets comes from Merino reared in Goulburn, Central Otago, New Zealand.

Are Plant Blankets suitable for windy conditions?

Yes, the combination of sphagnum moss and wool fibres helps keep the mat in place in windy conditions, as they tend to bind around each other, providing stability for young plants. When used on windy sites, it is recommended to cover the Plant Blankets with soil or stones to help keep them in place.
